At this rate you're going Iowa - We'll be sand bagging too!!

Seth and I are driving home to Iowa City next Wednesday, and the water hasn't stopped! Well, I hear it has crested in Waterloo/Cedar Falls - which is fantastic news. From CNN it looks like Cedar Rapids (about a 25 min drive from Iowa City) hasn't been doing too hot. Our house property isn't in danger, but the family sure is affected. They didn't have internet yesterday, Qwest was in the water in Cedar Rapids. Mom isn't too happy about that.

Last night when I called mom the sibilings there were all going out to bag more sand. It really does work, to build walls like that and put something over it all to hope the water doesn't just push them all over. But sometimes, the water just get too high and spills over anyway. I read somewhere yesterday that in some parts by the river the sand bags were 4-5 fee high, but it still went over.

I don't know if it sounds crazy or not, but I really really wish I was home to experience all of this!! I don't remember the flood of '93 well, I only remember going to bag sand with my neighbors to save the water plant. It was the neatest experience to see your community, all strangers, come together and work so hard to save something we all share. I'm happy my sibilings get to experience that opportunity as well, it's just fun! The youngest of us 7 hartley's wrote me the following on facebook about their fun times last night, I wish I could have been with you guys!!
